I read anything and everything I can get my hands on. I have a crazy thirst for knowledge and love to write. My blog posts are little golden nuggets of information I have picked up along the way, packaged into easy to read and informative pieces. I’ve done the searching and learning for you, so you can read at your leisure!

Everything I write and speak about, I’m passionate about.

During my last year at university I was offered the opportunity to research and write an Honors thesis. I chose to research and conduct a study around Positive Psychology practices, and how they influenced mentors and mentees in a program my facilitators and I designed.

During this process, I not only experienced first hand the magic of implementing Positive Psychology practices with others (which is a whole other story), but I learnt a lot about academic writing. A tricky thing about academic writing is it can sometimes be difficult to interpret and understand. Academics rarely translate their research for other researchers to understand, let alone members of the public or your average Joe-Blow. Someone with a PhD in chemistry could have difficultly interpreting what was written by someone with a PhD in physics.

When I made my discoveries during my Honors research and wanted to share them in my thesis, it had to be written in a way that included no personality or passion – only the facts. This experience was a pivotal one for me. Now when I write, correcting my own grammar doesn’t slow me down, I know how to search academic papers for evidence, and I love making my own rules – because everything that I write about, I’m passionate about! Having my own blog allows me to write passionately about things I find important, and what better thing to do with knowledge than to share it!

Emily Barnes’ Master Class: empowering young people by empowering ourselves

It was personal and motivating. I loved how you were so engaging with real life examples! Referring to research allowed for such a great emphasis to what you were talking about. Your knowledge and passion for helping others to understand more about emotions and choices is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing what you know and love! I can’t wait to apply some of these things to my practice.

I loved that it was appropriate to anyone – not just teachers.
